Emperor Penguins on Snow Hill Island Antarctica

If you've always dreamed of seeing Emperor Penguins in the wild, then an expedition cruise to Snow Hill Island is unquestionably the best way to do it.

Located in the Weddell Sea off the eastern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, Snow Hill Island is the only Emperor Penguin breeding ground accessible to visitors - and only reached by a handful of specialist expedition cruise operators.

Why Are Emperor Penguins So Hard to Find?

Emperor Penguins are the only penguin species that breed on fast ice - sea ice attached to the Antarctic continent - rather than on rocky shores like other penguins found around the Antarctic coastline and subantarctic islands. These colonies typically form in remote areas of sea ice, often surrounded by cliffs and icebergs that offer shelter from the wind, making them incredibly difficult to locate and even harder to reach.

They also breed during the harsh Antarctic winter (May-August), making it impossible to visit at that time. Chicks usually fledge in November and December, early in the Antarctica expedition cruise season. While you might be lucky enough to spot a solitary Emperor Penguin during a more typical Antarctic cruise, making it to Snow Hill Island guarantees an extraordinary sighting.

Snow Hill Island Location

The northernmost Emperor Penguin colony was first reached by Quark Expeditions in 2004. A small, remote island approximately 33 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide as its name suggests, it is mostly covered in snow and ice and sits just off the eastern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula in the remote Weddell Sea.

Only vessels with the highest ice-class rating can access this region, as its ice-choked waters make navigation for expedition cruise lines particularly challenging.

How Do You Get to Snow Hill Island?

After flying to the southern tip of South America, most travellers depart from Ushuaia or Puerto Williams to cross the Drake Passage to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. This infamous two-day crossing can be calm or turbulent, leading to the nicknames the 'Drake Lake' or 'Drake Shake'. We can offer expert tips for first-time Antarctic travellers and always reassure our guests: those who've made the journey consistently say it's worth it, regardless of the weather.

After reaching the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, your ship will sail into the Weddell Sea. If conditions allow, you'll reach Snow Hill Island either directly aboard a powerful icebreaker or, more commonly, via helicopter. In most cases, helicopters are used to land guests on the island, where a final short trek brings you to a colony of around 4,000 breeding pairs of Emperor Penguins - one of the most exclusive wildlife encounters on Earth.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Emperor Penguins on Snow Hill Island?

October and November are the ideal months for a Snow Hill Island expedition cruise. Ice and weather conditions during this window offer the best chance of a successful landing.

During these months, chicks have hatched and are at their most charming but have not yet departed. From January onwards, the colony begins to disperse as the penguins head out to sea to feed.

Which Expedition Cruise Lines Visit Snow Hill Island?

Only a few luxury expedition cruise lines have the capability to operate in the extreme conditions required to reach Snow Hill Island, and three stand out...

Quark Expeditions

As the pioneer of Snow Hill Island landings, Quark Expeditions regularly returns using their state-of-the-art ship Ultramarine. With two helicopters on board, guests are transported to within walking distance of the colony.

This trip and additional flightseeing excursions are included in the fare and Quark has even offered a "Snow Hill Guarantee" in the past - a 50% credit for a future cruise if landing isn't possible.

Top Tips for a Snow Hill Island Expedition Cruise

Understand the challenge

Snow Hill Island is notoriously difficult to access, and no landing is ever guaranteed. If this is your first trip to Antarctica, know that even without the landing, your journey will be unforgettable.

Choose a trusted operator

Travelling with a well-established expedition cruise company with experience in the Weddell Sea is essential for both safety and success.

Pick the right time

Itineraries later in the season (from February onwards) may feature older chicks or none at all, as Emperor Penguins leave the colony to feed at sea.

Select the right ship and cabin

Whether you want to minimise discomfort during the Drake Passage crossing or maximise luxury once you've reached Antarctica, choosing the right ship and accommodation matters. At Mundy Adventures, we've sailed with every cruise line we offer, and we'll help you choose what's right for your style of travel.

Extend your trip

Since you're travelling a long way, consider adding a pre- or post-cruise extension. Not only does this provide buffer time in case of flight delays, but it also gives you time to absorb and reflect on your extraordinary adventure. We can arrange hotels, tours, and more to make your journey seamless.
