As well as several measures taken across the fleet, such as eliminating the use of heavy fuel, CO2 offsetting and working towards a zero plastic waste policy, Le Commandant Charcot is the world's icebreaker to use hybrid propulsion combining LNG and electric generators, allowing Ponant to explore the polar regions in the cleanest possible way. Ponant have also made the ship available to the scientific community, fitted with labs, equipment and rooms for personnel, allowing scientists to research and observe the poles in order to better protect these delicate environments.
