Setting sail from Tromsø
Tromsø is often referred to as the Gateway to the Arctic. Its beauty astonishes new visitors with its magnificent views over the Tromsø strait. Tromsø's location, well within the Arctic Circle, means the summer months are lit by the Midnight Sun, a compensation for some rather long, dark winters. It is a wonderful city to explore on foot, wandering along the streets with their multi-coloured wooden houses. A must see is the amazing architecture of the Arctic cathedral, or perhaps take the cable car up to Mount Storsteinen (1,382ft) for a fantastic view.

Norway: Trollfjord
The beautiful Trollfjord, just 100 metres wide at its entrance, slices through Austvågøya island, which lies between the Lofoten and Vesterålen archipelagos. The trolls themselves are said to hide amongst the rocks during the day, emerging only at night.

Norway: Svolvær
Svolvær is the largest town in the Lofoten Islands, though with just over 4,000 inhabitants it’s hardly a bustling metropolis. From the picturesque harbour you can strike out into the stunning Lofoten countryside, where dramatic mountains tower above rustic little fishing villages.

Norway: Torghatten (Bronnoy)
Torghatten is a distinctive granite mountain that rises dramatically out of the sea near Brønnøysund, famous for the hole that cuts through the centre of the rock. According to legend, the hole was made by a troll, though the more likely explanation is that the tunnel was eroded by the sea when the mountain sat at a lower level.

Norway: Geiranger
The Geirangerfjord is arguably the most spectacular fjord in all of Norway, a sinuous ten mile stretch of sheer mountain walls and tumbling waterfalls. The village of Geiranger itself sits at one end of the fjord, and in summer the population swells with an influx of visitors to this beautiful region.

Norway: Måløy
The little town of Måløy is a major fishing port, on the sheltered eastern side of Vågsøy island. Nearby sights include the Kannesteinen rock, sculpted by the sea into a bizarre mushroom-like shape, while further afield is the Jostedalsbreen National Park, home to continental Europe’s largest glacier.

Arriving in Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven is the seaport for nearby Bremen, and was heavily damaged during the Second World War, though the modern city has some worthwhile attractions, including the excellent German Emigration Museum. As a former Hanseatic League city, Bremen has more historic charm, with an appealing Altstadt (old town).
