Colourful houses in Maniitsoq, Greenland

If you have one expedition destination on your list, make it Greenland. The icy and often inhospitable land of Greenland has virtually no roads, making a cruise simply the best - and often only - way to explore. Plus, with a new airport in Nuuk just opened - with two more to come - as well as direct flights from Copenhagen and soon from New York, Greenland is now easier than ever to reach. So, whether you want to book a voyage to explore Greenland proper or combine a Svalbard, Iceland and Greenland cruise, read on for seven of the best in 2025 and 2026...

A voyage to this part of the world is a true adventure, from traditional Inuit communities to stunning mountain scenery, with breathtaking ice formations and rugged fjords. From Greenland you can also cruise the Northwest Passage, the elusive route through the ice to the Pacific Ocean. In 2026, new airports will also open in Qaqortoq in the south and Ilulissat in the north, opening up even more ways of reaching the world's largest island. However you get there, now is the time to book...

Best Greenland cruises for 2025 & 2026

Quark

A cruise with polar experts Quark Expeditions is one of the best ways to see Greenland, with expert lectures and activities like whale watching, kayaking and more, and the line has a whole range of alternative options depending on your interests. For a classic Greenland cruise the line's Gems of West Greenland sailings in August and September 2025 and 2026 offers round-trip flights between Kangerlussuaq and the vibrant Icelandic city of Reykjavik, and highlights include Disko Bay, one of Greenland's most spectacular sights, where calving glaciers send huge icebergs floating out across the water among several species of whales; and the magnificent Greenland Ice Cap reached via Kangerlussuaq.

Alternatively, a Reykjavik round-trip sailing on 3 August 2026 includes witnessing the total solar eclipse in Iceland on 12 August, with highlights including crossing the Arctic Circle, Iceland's famous Westfjords and Greenland's dramatic Scoresbysund, the world's longest fjord system, a tree-like structure that makes its way nearly 250 miles inland from the Greenland Sea, with layers of basaltic lava forming the incredible surrounding landscapes.

Finally, an even more remote adventure awaits with Quark's Northeast Greenland itineraries departing in September 2025 and 2026, exploring the pristine Northeast Greenland National Park, a true slice of uninhabited, unspoiled Arctic wilderness home to wildlife including Arctic hares, musk oxen (an estimated 40% of the world's musk oxen are found here) as well as walrus, beluga whale and narwhal around the coast - with the chance to spot the dazzling Northern Lights alongside it all.

Or, Silversea's Silver Wind itinerary, departing on 25 July 2026, focuses on west Greenland sailing round trip from Nuuk and includes one of Greenland's most famous fjords, Evighed Fjord, and Eqi Glacier, one of the largest and most active glaciers in Greenland that calves several tonnes of ice into fjord daily, before you set sail to the remote islands of Arctic Canada. AE Expeditions

Expedition cruise company AE Expeditions is the perfect choice for adventurous travellers who like to be active, with optional activities on offer including kayaking and trekking in the company of small groups of like-minded people. Their west Greenland itineraries offer a quintessential Greenland exploration sailing to and from capital Nuuk, which has a striking setting amongst mountains and fjords, and you may spot humpback whales in the summer months. Departing in August 2025 on the 130-guest Sylvia Earle, you'll visit all the highlights of the west of the country for the perfect introduction to Greenland including the pristine blue-white glaciers of Disko Bay and Sisimiut, which means 'the people living in a place where there are fox dens', around 25 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

Or, traverse the Northwest Passage to take your adventure even further on a 30-day sailing that, after exploring west Greenland, sails to Arctic Canada including Devon Island and Baffin Island, departing in August 2025 and 2026. AE Expeditions also offer a solar eclipse itinerary aboard the 130-guest Greg Mortimer departing 2 August 2026, from Longyearbyen to Reykjavík. Seabourn

Greenland cruises from the UK are rare but if you are looking for an ex-UK sailing specifically, Seabourn offer an Edinburgh departure on the luxurious Seabourn Venture that explores Svalbard and sails among the East Greenland ice sheet for two days in May 2025 for spectacular views of the giant glaciers, and keeping an eye out for wildlife such as seals and seabirds. Though, with no landings in Greenland, we'd instead opt for their Iceland and Greenland cruise departing on 16 July 2026, combining a comprehensive Iceland exploration with the dramatic Scoresbysund.

There are also options to combine Greenland with the Northwest Passage for the ultimate adventure, with several departures in August 2026. Follow in the footsteps of great explorers as you sail from Reykjavik to Anchorage or vice versa via the giant glaciers of west Greenland's Disko Bay and the ultra-remote islands of Arctic Canada, exploring with Zodiac rides, kayaks and hikes and returning to gourmet dining and fantastic facilities on board the ship.

Ponant

Departing earlier in the year than any other cruise line, Ponant's standout Greenland cruises include voyages on luxury icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot that will sail to Northeast Greenland in May 2026, when the ice will still be pristine and the sight of any other cruise ships will be few and far between.

On Reykjavik round trips or between Reykjavik and Longyearbyen, the latter also including Svalbard, you'll sail with no set itinerary to the the ultra-remote frozen desert-like landscape of the Blosseville Coast, surrounded by pack ice, jagged peaks and icebergs, an incredibly wild and hard-to-reach place that's visited by only a few, making it a truly special experience. Look out for walruses, seals, narwhals, musk oxen and if you're incredibly lucky, polar bears, alongside discovering Inuit traditions, and returning each day to the luxuries of Le Commandant Charcot, from fine French dining to an exquisite spa.

HX Hurtigruten Expeditions

With bigger ships offering good value and a Scandi-esque, laidback style, HX are an excellent option for a Greenland cruise. We like their Grand Greenland itineraries departing in July 2025 and 2026 on the 528-guest expedition ship MS Frjidtoj Nansen for a complete exploration of west Greenland, including sailing all the way up to Qaanarq and the Thule region, one of the most northerly settlements in the world - and the furthest north you can sail on a cruise. The town's 600 hardy inhabitants endure permanent darkness in winter, while summer brings four months of 24-hour daylight.

HX will also depart on a Greenland-intensive solar eclipse itinerary departing on 2 August 2026, viewing the eclipse from on board 335-guest MS Spitsbergen, with the ship's manoeuvrability and small size allowing guests to get even closer to the stunning scenery that this part of the world is famous for.

Scenic

Scenic's selection of cruises to Iceland and Greenland depart in 2026 on board the luxury Scenic Eclipse super yacht, with a submarine and helicopters on board to enhance your adventure even further. We like the 18 August departure that sails from Reykjavik to Kangerlussuaq (with a flight back to Copenhagen) that calls in at Iceland's famous Dyjandi waterfall before exploring both east and west Greenland including the south coast, with highlights including the spectacular Prince Christian Sound on the southeastern tip of Greenland, where waterfalls cascade down the rugged mountain sides; and Narsaq, where famous Norse explorer Erik the Red chose to establish his first settlements in Greenland, and you can still see Norse ruins dating back over 1,000 years.

Alternatively, the 29 August Route of the Vikings sailing includes five days exploring west Greenland as well as the charming maritime towns of Atlantic Canada, ending among the cobbled streets and city icons of Boston. For the ultimate adventure, the two sailings can be combined as a back to back for an incredible 27-day sailing.

Finally, Scenic's 14-night voyage on 4th August 2026 from Longyearbyen to Reykjavik will be perfectly positioned to witness the spectacle of the total solar eclipse in the remote outskirts of Greenland from the luxurious ship as you keep watch for wildlife in remote Svalbard, discover charming towns and rich history in Iceland, and soak in the scenery from the yacht's observation deck whilst sailing the magnificent fjord network of East Greenland.
