Having first cruised with Ponant in 2019, it was lovely to be invited back on board for a seminar at sea to refresh myself on the experience of cruising with them and to learn about Ponant's current and forthcoming ventures and aims in the industry. Read on for all the latest news from Ponant...
With Le Lapérouse returning to Europe from Asia for the first time in two years, we were privileged to welcome her home to France and enjoy three days of elegant service, wonderful food and meet key personnel that drive Ponant to be the innovative, sustainable, luxurious and international cruise line it is.
Guided out of the port of Nice by two playful dolphins couldn't have been a more romantic start to our cruise on the French Riviera. We were treated to a champagne reception, hosted by Captain Maxime Benoit, followed by an indulgent gala dinner (which are always offered as welcome and farewell experiences on every Ponant voyage; a 'white night' gala dinner is also featured on voyages of eight nights or longer) where we were welcomed so warmly and enthusiastically by members of Ponant's UK reservations teams and department heads. We enjoyed opera entertainment in the evening along with a can-can-inspired performance by the ever-talented resident dancers. It was a bit of a pinch-me moment, with the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea and turquoise shimmer of the ship's idyllic infinity-style pool.
Returning to business in Ajaccio in Corsica the following morning, we were guided ashore to the Fesch Museum for an insight into Napolean's heritage and a study of some of the fine artwork, followed by an exclusive concert at St. Erasme Church in honour of Tino Rossi before a welcome wine tasting at the Citadel in true Napoleonic fashion. Informative talks took place in the afternoon, where Ponant highlighted the growth of their fleet.
Ponant was created by French merchant navy officers in 1988 and their first yacht was launched in 1991: Le Ponant. Ponant then introduced the four sisterships between 2010 and 2015 before joining the expedition sector in 2018 with their Explorer Yachts and acquiring Paul Gauguin Cruises in 2019 to diversify their portfolio. The line's groundbreaking addition of Le Commandant Charcot in 2021 (the world's first electric hybrid, advanced, Polar Class 3 icebreaker ship - capable of breaking through ice up to 8.5 feet thick) solidified their position in the expedition cruise industry. Finally, the line celebrated the arrival of the Spirit of Ponant in 2024 (their 12-guest sailing yacht, currently based in the Seychelles, on which guests can choose their own itinerary), and earlier this year obtained a majority stake in luxury small ship brand Aqua Expeditions - now making the Ponant Explorations Group a tri-branded company.
MS Paul Gauguin saw a €25 million investment to refurbish decks 8 and 9 last year, along with redesigned and reimagined public areas, all in harmony with the spirit of French Polynesia. They will be sending Le Jacques Cartier to the South Pacific in 2026 to offer adventurous expeditions in the region too.
Ponant strive for uniqueness in keeping with the line's values and heritage and our third day took us to a brand-new port of call for the line, the picturesque town of Menton. Known as the 'Pearl of the French Riviera', its old town is full of colourful buildings, narrow streets, beautiful beaches and a mix of French and Italian influences. Our hike around the bay and up into the mountainside enabled us to witness its famed citrus trees and lemon and orange groves, with a delicious tasting of a local limoncello, ending with a lemon-inspired lunch at La Trattoria.
Ponant's brand awareness in the UK is increasing, not only thanks to its guest benefits (including a 'Status Match' scheme which matches loyalty benefits of other cruise line loyalty programme to enjoy various reductions and additions), but also with their sustainable practices.
All 14 vessels in Ponant's fleet are 100% cleanship certified, with their CEO Herve Gastinel emphasising the group's greenhouse gas emissions sitting at just 0.5%. Under Ponant's pioneering 'Swap2Zero' project, they are aiming to develop sustainable wind-assisted propulsion by creating the very first zero-emissions oceangoing cruise ship by 2030. This innovative, multi-energy concept will combine solar panels with renewable fuels to generate up to 50% wind power at 10 knots, over 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and 30 days of full autonomy.
With seamless communication of both French and English on board (from announcements and signage to menus and excursions), as well as their partnerships with Smithsonian Journeys for truly in-depth exploration, and their advanced ships offering unique itineraries, Ponant are a fantastic line to cruise with, with an exciting future ahead.
