Steep cliffs, swirling currents and the capricious weather of the Southern Ocean make landings difficult on the subantarctic islands of Prince Edward and Marion. A South African research station on Marion studies local meteorology, climate and the marine life of the islands, which includes eight different species of albatross.

Chicago, the 'Windy City', is a spectacular open-air museum of modern architecture, scattered with striking skyscrapers and sculptures by the likes of Frank Gehry, Anish Kapoor and Frank Lloyd Wright. The city is known for its fantastic food, vibrant nightlife and sports-mad locals, plus cultural attractions including the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium. Chicago's soaring skyline is best appreciated by boat from Lake Michigan, and this is a great place to begin or end a cruise around the Great Lakes.
