Setting sail from Ushuaia
Ushuaia is sometimes described as 'the city at the end of the world', though its rugged beauty is far from apocalyptic. Perched on the ragged southern edge of Argentina, where the snow-capped Andes fall away into the churning sea, the city has a frontier town feel to it, and serves as the base for expeditions into the icy waters of Antarctica. There are also plenty of outdoor pursuits on offer here, including hiking, skiing and fishing, and the Tierra del Fuego National Park is home to spectacular scenery and wildlife including penguins, guanacos, sea lions and condors.

Chile: Cape Horn
Surrounded by notoriously treacherous waters and battered by gale force winds known as the Furious Fifties, Cape Horn is the dramatic southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. This is the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, watched over by a lonely lighthouse.

Chile: Puerto Natales
Puerto Natales, situated at the southern end of the Chilean Fjords, is a major tourism hub for southern Patagonia. Formerly a fishing port, the town is now the gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park, a spectacular landscape of granite peaks, grassy steppes and azure lakes, populated by guanacos, condors, pumas and more.

Chile: Ainsworth Bay
Ainsworth Bay is a spectacular coastal inlet within Alberto de Agostini National Park, fed by meltwater from the retreating Marinelli Glacier. The sheltered bay, surrounded by pristine forest, is an important habitat for elephant seals and birds including Magellanic penguins, cormorants and skuas.

Arriving in Santiago
Chile's cosmopolitan capital is a smart, sophisticated place, where life plays out against the backdrop of the snow-capped Andean mountains. Santiago's moneyed elite congregate in the upmarket districts of the Barrio Alto, while Centro is home to museums, theatres and shopping malls. It's a leafy and eminently liveable city, in spite of the fact that more than a third of the population of Chile lives in Santiago. The city continues to grow outwards and upwards, its skyline crowned by the Costanera Centre, South America's tallest building, but an excellent metro system makes it easy to get around, and there are several lovely parks that afford plenty of breathing space.
Our tip
Get around using the reliable metro system. At night taxis are cheap and reliable, but make sure you have the address written down if you don’t speak Spanish.
