Setting sail from Edinburgh

Edinburgh - what a city! The capital city of Scotland has some striking and varied architecture, an imposing Castle, memorable museums and galleries and some wonderful restaurants. And what we love best about this buzzing city is that you can always look up, and there's the beautiful countryside - the Seven Hills - surrounding you. It's a city of inexhaustible delights; in one day alone you could see the Scottish Crown Jewels and Stone of Destiny, follow the Royal Mile to explore narrow closes steeped in history, and go to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Edinburgh Dungeon and the Scottish Parliament.

Don't miss

Walk through Grassmarket to see some of Edinburgh’s oldest streets and alleys, and some unusual independent shops where you can find dedicated craftsmen, artisans and experts.

Arriving in Aberdeen

The 'granite city' of Aberdeen is flush with money from the North Sea oil boom, and boasts cultural attractions including the fascinating Maritime Museum and the Aberdeen Art Gallery. Head out into the countryside and you'll find magnificent castles, wild mountain scenery and whisky distilleries aplenty.

Aurora Expeditions - Greg Mortimer in Antarctica
Aurora Expeditions - Greg Mortimer - Captains Suite
Aurora Expeditions - Kayaking in Spitsbergen

The Greg Mortimer is an exciting new purpose-built expedition ship with a revolutionary design, which joined the Aurora Expeditions fleet in 2019.

What we love

Just take a look at the pictures - quite different from anything we have seen before, with a revolutionary new patented X-BOW design which has a number of benefits. Not only does it increase passenger comfort by eliminating slamming in heavy seas, but also the journey is speeded up so uncomfortable rides in heavy seas are minimised. This also results in environmental benefits, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

On board, AE Expeditions passengers will enjoy the company's established style - a comfortable, friendly and laid-back vibe in the company of like-minded travellers, for whom the time ashore is everything. The focus is on small group exploration, with a commitment to getting off the ship as much as possible for up close and personal encounters with wilderness and wildlife.

Ways to make it better
The Witchery by the Castle, Edinburgh

Where to stay in Edinburgh

For sheer weird quirkiness, the Witchery by the Castle has to be our top choice: gothic and theatrical, this is Edinburgh at its best.

Forth Bridge, Scotland

What to see around Edinburgh

Cross the Forth Bridge to visit Hopetoun House, the seaside fortress Blackness Castle, the House of the Binns, the Palace of Linlithgow and Rosslyn Chapel.
