Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Review: Norway & the Arctic on Hanseatic Spirit

Published 13th of March 2025 | By Heather Newman-Mitchell

I recently had my first taste of expedition on board Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' Hanseatic Spirit in Norway and the Arctic - and now I'm already planning my next adventure! Read on for my review of Hanseatic Spirit with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

It all began in Hamburg with an easy transfer and flight with Hapag-Lloyd and on arrival at the pier our bags were whisked away and delivered to our cabin where we met the manager and senior crew members, toasting with a glass of bubbles as we took in the views of Hamburg.

Opening the door to my balcony suite - wow! I stepped into the living area and was greeted with a chilled bottle of Champagne and canapés as I settled in to my room with two queen beds complete with choice of pillow menu, a living area with a comfortable sofa, and among plenty of storage space fluffy dressing gowns, slippers, and flip-flops (great for the spa) and a mini bar with included soft drinks. You'll also find walking poles and Swarovski binoculars to use throughout your sailing, and the bathroom boasts a rain shower and hot wall where you can dry your Hapag-Lloyd parka - complimentary for use during your expedition, alongside a handy rucksack which is yours to keep.

I loved my spacious balcony with two reclining chairs which had a great sense of privacy with floor-to-ceiling dividers on each side and a glass front from where you can take in the amazing views. It was then time to explore the ship and and she certainly is beautiful - with a maximum of only 199 guests on expedition cruises, it feels extremely light and airy throughout - certainly inspired by nature, as evoked by Hapag-Lloyd's slogan - with a very Scandinavian feel. I was fascinated about how the German/bilingual aspect of the ship would work, but I needn't have worried at all - it truly was completely bilingual, from the staff and the menus to the announcements and all the paraphernalia we were given about the region and ship.

That evening we enjoyed a sailaway on the pool deck enjoying a hot Aperol spritz with fellow guests and crew, accompanied by music from Frederic the entertainer followed by a five-course meal at the Hanseatic Restaurant - meals here need to be pre-booked (but are offered an unlimited number of times). This beautiful green-hued restaurant has a fantastic five-course menu with each dish captured beautifully, rotated over the week with different options - I went for my classic favourite, a medium-rare fillet steak cooked to perfection, it was to die for! We also tried the second dining venue l'Esprit - one booking per sailing is allowed per guest, and pre-booking is a must. I loved this French-inspired restaurant with a very Parisian feel and décor. Be aware that all drinks (bar tea, coffee and water) are extra throughout.

The next day we headed off to the Lido buffet restaurant that serves all three daily meals should you so wish in a buffet style - and I chose to enjoy breakfast on the outside deck, complete with heaters and blankets as I indulged in my favourite eggs benedict, avocado, and freshly squeezed juices. With only 199 aboard the ship never felt crowded, and I liked tucking myself in a little corner to enjoy the views after a dip in the whirpool. I loved the huge spa which offered a sauna, relaxation area with beds and comfy chairs and panoramic views out to sea, outdoor relaxation area, ice area and treatment rooms. The Pool Deck and Pool Bar were also a great place to relax with a heated swimming pool, whirlpool, and plenty of sun beds to enjoy the magnificent views and all-day snacks from the pool bar.

The open bridge policy was also fantastic and it was a real treat to meet Captain Claas and his crew, and see how the whole operation works as we took in the 360-degree panoramic views across the Norwegian Fjords. I even looked through the giant binoculars to take in the beautiful scenery, snow-capped mountains and colourful houses dotted around the landscape.

Day three saw us dock in beautiful Bergen, a gateway to the Norwegian fjords and Norway's former capital - a perfect city to explore on foot and we took the chance to join a walking tour with a local guide. We visited the old Hanseatic wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with colourful wooden houses along the harbour which back in the day was a trading centre and now houses small boutiques among the old harbour timber buildings.

After the tour, I decided to take the funicular railway to the top of Mount Fioyen where I enjoyed breathtaking views across the city - here you also have a choice of walking back down the well-maintained hiking trail or visiting the busy fish market, though we didn't have time for this.

kayaking in Alesund from Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' Hanseatic Spirit in the Arctic

The next day saw us dock at the stunning Art Nouveau architecture of Alesund which blends elements of the German 'Jugendstil' with Viking flourishes. After a night of snow, I wondered if our planned kayak excursion would go ahead. Of course it did - Norwegians are known to embrace all weathers after all! We all made our way into the changing room where you are allocated a locker to store your expedition gear and rubber boots - which are all to be cleaned and washed on return by showering down your boots and then walking through the giant blue brushes which rotate.

Fully layered up as the Arctic air began to bite, we headed to the activity centre which was a short walk from the ship with our guide and talked through the safety briefing before it was time to get kitted out - which consisted of three thin top layers, thermal tights, thermal leggings, ski socks and ski salopettes, as well as a dry suit to wear over the top, along with dry shoes, and gloves. Then came the skirt that goes around the kayak seat area to keep you dry - a lot of layers, but worth it!

In pairs we were ready to set off and had a lovely journey kayaking among the Norwegian Fjords, and even headed out to the calm sea to see our beautiful ship docked. Although there were snow showers it was great fun and a great way to experience the area.

The next day saw us enjoy a sea day and I loved taking some time to enjoy the ship, from lunch at the Lido - a delicious parmesan pasta served from a giant cheese wheel enjoyed on the outside deck - before a relax in the lemon-scented spa and indoor relaxation area with panoramic views.

One of my favourite areas to relax each day with a pre-dinner drink was the Observation Lounge with its centrepiece globe, surrounded by screens which provide destination and ship information showing the ship's position, route and course with a lovely reading area with a selection of books and plenty of comfy seating areas where you can enjoy the 360-degree views with floor-to-ceiling windows.

On my final evening I enjoyed an Arctic Circle crossing celebration for crew and guests, with a glass of bubbles toasted to all the newcomers with a 'baptism', receiving my certificate to certify I had crossed it!

Finally, we arrived in Tromso, and I strolled along the streets with their multi-coloured wooden houses and witnessed the amazing architecture of the Arctic cathedral - I didn't have time of the cable car up to Mount Storsteinen but this provides a fantastic view. Tromso's location well within the Arctic Circle means it's a great place to see the Northern Lights - in fact it's called the Northern Lights capital of the world - but sadly the changeable Norwegian weather means we missed seeing the aurora by just one day! I would recommend downloading the Aurora app that keeps you up to date - and if there are possible sightinsg the Captain also makes announcements. Further out of the city, you can also meet indigenous Sami people with a traditional visit or even go mushing with huskies - just ask Hapag-Lloyd and they can organise all your activities before and after your cruise.
