Porto Empedocle, on the south west coast of Sicily, is the gateway to Agrigento and the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Temples. The temples are all that is left of the city of Akragas, one of the most impressive Ancient Greek sites outside of Greece itself.

Sousse is Tunisia’s third largest city, built on the site of the ancient Phoenician settlement of Hadrumetum. The UNESCO-listed medina contains a number of important buildings that are typical of the early Islamic period in the Maghreb, and this is also where you’ll find the superb Sousse Archaeological Museum.

The streets of Algiers have so many stories to tell. Broad boulevards and elegant villas are legacies of the French colonial period, while the atmospheric Casbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the city’s Islamic heart. Algeria has been through some difficult times in recent years, but the people are warm, friendly and keen to welcome tourists.

Oran is Algeria’s bustling second city, originally founded by the Moors and later ruled by the Spanish, Ottomans and French. These influences can be seen in Oran’s eclectic architecture, and the city was also the birthplace of rai, a type of Algerian folk music that emerged in the 1920s.

The bustling port of Motril is less than an hour’s drive from Granada, last stronghold of the Moors in Spain and home to the famous Alhambra palace. The narrow streets of the Albayzín quarter are particularly evocative of the days of Al Andalus, and you can explore Granada’s Jewish heritage in the atmospheric Realejo district.

Seville is a wonderful destination, a sophisticated and sun-kissed city on the banks of the Guadalquivir river. It’s a treat for all the senses, from the smell of orange blossom to the heart-tugging sounds of flamenco, and the highlight of the calendar is undoubtedly Semana Santa, when a spectacular Easter parade fills the streets.

Portimão is a bustling fishing port and gateway to the Algarve, with a pleasant riverside promenade where the smell of sizzling sardines fills the air. The most popular attraction is Praia da Rocha just to the south, one of the Algarve’s loveliest beaches.
