Setting sail from Icoaraci
The Guajará river is a tributary of the Amazon, where you will have the opportunity to learn about everyday life in the rainforest and search for wildlife including iguanas, sloths and pink river dolphins. You will also see riverside water buffalo farms and palm trees bearing bunches of açaí berries.
Brazil: Rio de Janeiro
The carnival capital of the world, Rio de Janeiro needs little introduction. We can think of few cities in the world that are able to compete when it comes to location: hugging the beautiful sandy shore and surrounded by jungle-clad islands and mountains, including the iconic Corcovado, the setting for Brazil’s most vibrant city is simply breathtaking.
Manaus is a remarkable place, a sweltering, steamy city in the heart of the Brazilian rainforest. Situated near the confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon rivers, surrounded by thick jungle, the city is a major port in spite of its location some 1,000 miles from the sea.
Arriving in Iquitos
The Amazon river port of Iquitos is the largest city in the world unreachable by road, connected to the outside world only by air and river. It's also further inland than any other port in the world, closer to the Pacific than it is to the Amazon's mouth on the Atlantic coast. Iquitos was founded by Jesuit missionaries in the 18th century, and grew rich on the back of the rubber trade. Nowadays it's a bustling hub for trips into the untamed Peruvian Amazon in search of wildlife, featuring not just on river cruise itineraries but also ocean cruises for those ships small enough to sail this far upriver.
