Setting sail from Raja Ampat
Sparsely populated and spectacularly beautiful, the Raja Ampat archipelago is a treasure trove of jungle-smothered islands, white sand beaches and some of the best diving in the world. The crystal clear waters are teeming with tropical fish, while on land you can see parrots, hornbills and birds of paradise.
Indonesia: Gam Island
Gam is one of the larger islands in the Raja Ampat archipelago, with a landscape of steep limestone peaks cloaked in jungle, home to bird species including the spectacular red bird-of-paradise. Visitors receive a friendly welcome from the local villagers, while offshore lie some superb snorkelling spots.
Indonesia: Cape Kri (Kri Island)
Kri Island is a popular destination for divers, with homestays dotted along the beachfront, and the dive site at Cape Kri holds the world record for the most species recorded on a single dive - 374, to be precise! The island’s terrain makes hiking difficult, but there are some lovely coastal walks.
The beautiful, uninhabited karst islands of Wayag are Raja Ampat’s most iconic sight, home to some of the archipelago’s most spectacular dive sites. Under the water you can spot sharks, barracudas and manta rays, while on land you might catch a glimpse of a rare bird of paradise.
Indonesia: Pulau Pef
The beautiful Pulau Pef is like Raja Ampat in miniature, carpeted in lush jungle and surrounded by smaller limestone islets and stunning turquoise bays. Activities on offer include snorkelling, diving, hiking, kayaking and birdwatching, and it’s one of Raja Ampat’s most photogenic locations.
Indonesia: Dayang Island
Indonesia: Birie Island
Birie Island, in Raja Ampat, is a fantastic snorkelling and diving spot, with the chance to spot marine life including black tip reef sharks, turtles, pygmy seahorses, manta rays and even dugongs if you’re lucky. Alternatively, why not take a jungle hike in search of fruit bats, birds of paradise, cockatoos and parrots.
