Mawlaik, situated on the banks of the Chindwin river, was the headquarters of the Bombay Burma Trading Company during the British colonial era, and was a key centre for the teak industry. The homes of the company men can be seen amongst overgrown gardens, and elephants are still used to log the surrounding hills.
