Our insight
Defining what we mean by a 'luxury expedition' is tricky, since both words mean different things to different people. But we will give it our best shot…
A luxury expedition could mean days spent cruising the icy Arctic waters off Spitsbergen on board a Silversea Expeditions ship, carving through an ethereal landscape of gunmetal skies and glassy seas, on the lookout for polar bears. Then, in the midnight sun-lit evening, enjoying the very best in first class service and exquisite cuisine.
Or it could mean exploring regions that are only just opening up to tourism, such as the enchanting and little developed waterways of Myanmar (Burma). You might be the sort of person who enjoys the offbeat and the undiscovered, but doesn't want to sacrifice on comfort, in which case we recommend an Ayeyarwady river cruise on board one of Belmond's luxurious vessels.
Alternatively, a luxury expedition could just mean appreciating a well known destination from a new perspective, such as a Nile river cruise on board Sanctuary Retreats' intimate and exclusive 36 guest cruiser.
Ultimately, a luxury expedition cruise is about seeing the world in style, which of course just happens to be what we at Mundy Adventures do best - travel wide, yes; but also travel well!
Silversea Expeditions brings together the very best of Italian hospitality and exuberance, alongside the most inspiring team of expert guides, naturalists and scientists, and a marine team dedicated to your safety as you explore far from civilisation. This winning combination creates the ultimate adventure in style.
Expedition cruising requires high levels of experience and expertise, and in these areas Hapag-Lloyd is in pole position – just as you would hope from a company specialising in Arctic and Antarctic cruises. Combine that with great service and excellent accommodation, and you have a winning combination.
Scenic Eclipse is a rare combination: a stylish and elegant ship, with the cutting edge technology and equipment of a state-of-the-art expedition vessel. This is Scenic’s first foray into the world of expedition cruising, having established themselves in the touring and river cruise market, and the ship is equipped with an ice-strengthened hull, a helicopter and even a seven-seater submarine!
Spring 2022 saw the launch of Seabourn Venture, followed by sister ship Seabourn Pursuit in 2023. These polar class vessels combine stylish design with high-tech expedition equipment, all with an unwavering focus on ensuring your destination experience is faultless.
Ponant’s super modern fleet comprises four stylish yachts carrying a maximum of 264 guests each, six 'explorer' yachts, each carrying 184 guests, and the innovative ice-breaker vessel Le Commandant Charcot, carrying up to 245 guests in extreme environments, making it the largest modern expedition fleet in the world.
Launched in 2007, Aqua Expeditions began with a custom-built vessel designed by acclaimed architect Jordi Puig operating on the Peruvian Upper Amazon, one of the last great unexplored regions, and now operates ships on the Mekong and the Indonesian coast, with a new yacht in the Galapagos coming soon.
